HEAT PUMPS
The most efficient alternative
Heat Pumps
Feeding energy directly into your home
Simply put, a heat pump is a device that transfers thermal energy from one point to another. They are a highly efficient way of keeping your house or office building warm. In the UK, where the climate is fairly moderate, heat pumps can work all year round even at the lower temperatures found in our winters.
We are qualified installers for both air source and ground source heat pumps and would be ideally suited for properties with good thermal insulation values. Many older buildings would need or would have received work associated with obtaining these values but with a new build this would be obtained with up to date construction methods.
Heat pumps operate very much like a domestic fridge in reverse keeping things simple to understand and can offer a very sustainable means of heating within your home. The two different types of heat pumps are Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) taking its heat from the air and Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) taking its heat from the ground, this is then converted into heat for your home.
Installing a heat pump system into your home could make large savings on energy bills depending on how your home is supplied now and both air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps are eligible for government renewable heat incentives.
The choice between air source and ground source depends on space available as with ground source there is a large amount of pipework to be laid in the ground as apposed to air source. Ground source pipework can also be laid in lakes or ponds extracting heat from the water as apposed to the ground so if this could be a factor also.
Heat pump installation may be subject to certain planning laws depending on location and we can help with the specific applications necessary to get consent for installation.
We work with several manufacturers of air source heat pumps and with technologies changing all the time we aim to use the best equipment we can ensuring longevity of installation. In general manufacturers warranties are around 10 years but the operational timespan of an air source heat pump can surpass 20 years if regular checks and inspections carried out by the homeowners and a check over by us the installers generally every 5 years.
With ground source heat pumps, they use a pipe network buried in the ground or lake/pond to extract the heat to be transferred into the property. Larger loops of pipework are more efficient than smaller ones so this type of system would depend on space available. Bore holes can be drilled to install pipework if surface area is limited but this can be costly, so it is important to choose the right system for your home. As with air source heat pumps we work with the best available products we can for longevity and maintenance the same for a ground source heat pump.
